“Gayla,” Talien called.

Gayla ground her teeth in frustration. She had been hoping to escape the glade unnoticed. Smoothing her face, she swung about. “Commander,” she inquired politely.

“Who did you leave in command of the southern outpost?”

“Lotrien,” she replied.

Talien winced, clearly unimpressed by her choice. “You will return to the outpost and resume command.”

Damn, I knew it. Why does it always have to be me? “But why?” she protested. “We’ve already found those trailing Kyran. Surely Lotrien can command that post just as easily.”

“Gayla—” Talien began sternly.

“Please don’t send me south again,” Gayla begged. “I just got back from there and can help with the battle. If you must send someone, send—”

“Stop,” Talien said, fixing her with a hard glare. “This is important. If Yiralla enters the forest, we must know. She is a bigger threat than Misteria’s champion. Do not take this lightly.”

His tone softened. “There is a reason I left you in charge instead of Lotrien. I’m entrusting you with a grave responsibility. Will you do this?”

“Yes, sir,” Gayla said. Outwardly she was composed again, but inwardly her heart was sinking. She would much rather be anywhere but watching the uninteresting southern border again.

But orders were orders.
